During the last decades, the major population is moving away from the countryside to cities due to high-tech living standards, better educational and employment opportunities. However, in the future, this trend of migration can cause major issues such as an imbalance of the population.
Firstly, the value of life has been affected badly. In urban areas, there is a lot of pressure on the resources such as land, water, and infrastructures like public transport, places, health care, law, and order. More demand for land pushes more property prices. Secondly, issues like more consumption of electricity and water occur, which leads to limited access to drinking water and poses serious health diseases among people. For example, during the last year, the Indian government increase electricity charges from 2 rupees per unit to 6.5 rupees per unit this directly put the burden on people’s budgets.
Moreover, there are more employment opportunities in cities undoubtedly, but it also affects agriculture production. In villages, as more land exits farming, the local agricultural economy may suffer. The small-scale farmer has suffered due to closer proximity to urban consumers and new output venues allow farmers to adapt their agricultural operations to a higher value or specialty crops, such as fruits and vegetables. This has also led to the industrialization of farming and modern methods are being used to meet the demands of the increased population of cities.
Immediate solutions are difficult to find. The most important factor is to understand, the growth of urban areas is not bad but unplanned growth is bad. Careful and advanced planning of cities with the future in mind is required. Small-scale urban agriculture should be promoted. This will meet the food needs. In addition, If cities and villages are linked well with efficient public transport, many people would not shift to cities.
To conclude, if the government will equally treat the rural population as urban ones by facilitating and establishing well-planned links among them then surely this chain of migration can be break to some extent.
