IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay 33 Band 8 Sample Answer

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or storage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is a debatable issue whether people should accept unpleasant situations or make efforts to polish them up. While there are some justifications for accepting certain bad situations, making an effort to overcome the negativities may be a better solution. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and express my perspective.

On the one hand, people who insist that bad situations should be accepted tend to lack the courage to change their life. For instance, many people who stick to a dissatisfied or hard job are afraid of quitting. They are unhappy with their duties at the workplace, yet they do not want to quit because they often fear the uncertain future. They are worried that they may have to stay jobless for a while and struggle to earn their livelihood before finding employment again. Consequently, they accept the things as it is without making an effort to improve it. However, in some cases, situations are beyond our power to improve. For example, in case of serious illness, we cannot do much to prevent or the untimely death of a dear one. In such circumstances, people have to cope with the loss and the negativities than brooding over it.

Many people are afraid to leave their homes because of crime. Some believe that more action should be taken to prevent crime. While others feel that little action can be done to stop crime. What is your view?

On the other hand, generally, people say that “Continuous effort– not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential. There is only a need to make efforts. For example, nobody has to suffer a hard job when better jobs are available on the market on searching. Of course, this might require learning a new skill or qualifying, but it is worth our while. Likewise, people suffering from poor health can see some visible improvements if they adopt an exercise routine and a healthy diet. Those in toxic relationships can regain their sanity by opting to break up. Several situations can be improved with a little effort because all things are difficult before they are easy. Hence, the argument that all bad situations should be accepted without complaining does not hold water.

In conclusion, although people sometimes have reasonable excuses to live in a bad situation, it is beneficial to improve adverse circumstances. In my opinion, it is better to try to get out of the negatives.

Some people believe that the most important thing to consider when designing a building is the function rather than the outlook. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
