IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay 18 Band 8 Sample Answer

Air traffic is increasingly leading to more noise, pollution, and airport construction. One reason for this is the growth in low-cost passenger flights, often to holiday destinations. Some people say that government should try to reduce air traffic by taxing it more heavily.

There has been an enormous increase in the amount of air traffic around the world over recent years. It is resulting in various issues, and the cause behind this has been the growth of low-cost airlines. Although, some people believe that taxes should be increased. I think it is not a solution.

The availability of low-cost flights is the main reason that makes air travel more attractive. Firstly, higher taxes may result in less attraction of passengers by making flights expensive. This move will advertently impact the airline industry because it will lead to a decrease in flight demand. Tourists might prioritize travel by cheaper means of transportation rather than traveling by air. For example, a higher proportion of Thailand’s economy gathers from tourism. If it increases taxes on flights then it adversely affects the economy of Thailand.

In some countries, most people prefer to rent their homes rather than buying them. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of renting homes?

Secondly, due to heavy taxing, people with low income will affect significantly, as they cannot afford high-cost airfares. Such a tax would have to be a fixed amount paid equally whether you are rich or poor, which means that those on lower incomes would find it more difficult to travel, but it would likely have little effect on the lives of those with a higher income. For example, in America, almost all flights from New York City are much expensive that even the majority of the American population cannot afford it easily. In addition, such a tax would not work. For example, we have seen taxes increase in most countries on cars, but this has had little effect, with car use continuing to grow.

To conclude, imposing taxes on flights for reducing air traffic or noise pollution is not the only solution as it affects various other aspects that are working systematically. So, the government should take another measure to tackle this issue.
