IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay 19 Band 8 Sample Answer

Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

The statement reveals that authorities should give more preference to invest in railway constructions rather than roads. However, in my opinion, money allocation for both sectors should be equal.

Firstly, rail transport is better organized. It has fixed routes and schedules. Its service is frequent, uniform, and regular as compared to other modes of transportation. Secondly, its speed over long distances is more than another mode of transport, except airways. Thus, it is the best choice for long-distance traffic. It is a cheaper mode as compared to other modes of transportation. Every increase in railway traffic is followed by a decrease in the average cost. On top of all, better railroads are beneficial to society from an environmental perspective as it uses fewer emissions and safe environment from pollution. These factors make people think that governments should invest more in railways.

On the other hand, roads are equally important. Roads are more flexible than railways. Its routes and timings are adjustable to individual requirements. Because, roads can reach everywhere and a link between the different facilities that people need every day such as houses, shopping centers, and hospitals. Consequently, constructing and maintaining roads will solve the problem of traffic congestion as well as boost road safety. For example, a recent survey conducted in New York has shown that increasing the budget spent on roads significantly reduced motor vehicle accidents by 30%. Moreover, road construction is easy in hilly terrains and undulating topography. Thus, roads are a crucial part of the design of any modern city.

In conclusion, roadways, and railways both sectors have their benefits to assist people for hassle-free traveling. Hence, I oppose the argument that the government should spend more on railways. Both should treat equally

Air traffic is increasingly leading to more noise, pollution, and airport construction. One reason for this is the growth in low-cost passenger flights, often to holiday destinations. Some people say that government should try to reduce air traffic by taxing it more heavily.
