IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay 21 Band 8 Sample Answer

Some people get into debt by buying things they don’t need and can’t afford. What are the reasons for this behavior? What action can be taken to prevent people from having this problem?

In this day and age, the materialistic world forces consumers to buy luxury goods that are not suited to their budget. Due to this, many people are ending up with serious problems of debts. The essay will discuss several factors that are counted behind these situations and solutions to tackle them.

Firstly, the cause is that many consumers do not act rationally, or in a way that is in their best financial interest. For example, majority of people use to upload their photographs with expensive goods just to show off their status. It triggers them to buy fancy stuff blindly without measuring income. Secondly, nowadays, banks’ credit card availability for consumers allows spending more than they can afford. Many people internationally use their credit cards to pay for overpriced items as they can pay off the money in installments. Another reason is that the sense of accomplishment is another reason why some people buy luxury goods. They feel satisfied by buying qualitative items from expensive malls and supermarkets. All these factors jointly persuade an individual to expend more on needless things.

Some people think that newspapers are the best way to get news. However, others believe that they can get news better through other media. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some measures can help to escape consumers from debt issues. First of all, people should think or act rationally under reason or logic without showing off. Another solution is, there should be proper guidelines from banks or finance companies while issuing credit cards to their consumers. Everything should be in the knowledge of cardholders. On top of all, the government should deduct the taxes on qualitative goods. So that families with low income could easily afford it. It may be possible by limiting the number of supermarkets and malls in all cities.

In conclusion, a lot of people are indeed having debt problems, as they purchase luxurious stuff to have fancy lifestyles. But it is generally said that rather than opting for a fake marvelous life, it will be better to look at your sheets.
