IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay 23 Band 8 Sample Answer

Many people believe that a person’s culture is defined by their country of origin, while others believe that it has only a minor influence. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

It is debatable whether the cultural traits of a person are determined by the nation they come from. However, some other factors impact their personalities, such as society, environment, or community. The essay will discuss both views.

The culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage rituals, what we believe is right or wrong, how we behave with others, and a million other things. The country we come from not only indeed influences our culture but all spheres of our life. It gives a sense of identity to a person. For example, country name, national symbols, language, national history, national consciousness, and cultural artifacts remain the same though a person goes across the whole world.

The housing shortage in big cities can cause severe social consequences. Some people think only government action can solve this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above statement?

On the other hand, the society and community where someone is born and nourished also shape him to make an impression. The environment around forcefully pushes a person to live under rituals. For instance, many Middle Eastern Islamic women living in developed areas like America, Canada nowadays have stopped covering their hair by opposing their religion of wearing the burqa, a long garment to cover the body. It shows the social norms are more valid than that of origins.

To conclude, both sides have their importance as a country defines our culture and social norms and environment around us also reshape our culture to many extend.

Some people get into debt by buying things they don’t need and can’t afford. What are the reasons for this behavior? What action can be taken to prevent people from having this problem?
